Is It Okay to Remove Low Quality Content on Your Website?

It can be okay to remove low quality content, but first you need to define what you mean by low quality. Google representatives have been consistent that there is no word count minimum for a page, which means it is hard to label something as thin content purely based on length. In reality, only users can decide whether a page is useful. If Google tries to interpret that, it would have to lean on signals like engagement patterns, clicks, and whether users bounce back to the search results quickly.

If by low quality you mean content that is not performing at all, then yes, it can be fine to remove it, especially if it is not mapped to a clear keyword or topic and is not contributing to your topical authority. Pages that do not earn impressions, do not attract links, and do not support your internal linking structure can be candidates for removal or consolidation.

Before deleting, consider alternatives. You might merge the content into a stronger page, rewrite it to target a clearer intent, or update it based on what is currently ranking. Another option is republishing it under a new slug, which can force Google to evaluate it as a new page. Also consider whether your topical authority has changed since you first posted it. A page that failed early might perform better now with stronger site authority and better internal links.
